Fireworks and dogs don't mix so here's what you do......................

,
Hello to my dog club and anyone else who might like to read this. As I won't be seeing you guys until after Fireworks night (and Diwali) I'll just have to give you your lesson now.............

Firework fears and noise phobias are common problems in dogs and its estimated that at least 80% of them are scared of fireworks.

How to recognise the symptoms of a noise sensitive dog:

Signs and symptoms a dog may exhibit, which can range from mild to extreme:

Urinating or defaecating, hiding

Chewing, panting, pacing or digging

Trying to escape, drooling or licking of lips

Seeking out the owner, flatulence ( with Jimmy it appears normal at any time)

Barking, trembling or dilated pupils

So what can we do about it:

Try and provide/make a den as in the picture, the blanket around the cage or den area can hopefully muffle the sounds of the bangs and if there are some tasty treats and toys the distraction of this can hopefully deflect noise issues
Other things you can do is to have a radio or television on at night and close windows and doors to keep the noise to a mimimum and don't forget to close the curtains

Try and ignore fearful behavior, dogs in particular may pick up on their owners anxiety making the problem worse. The best thing I would suggest is to leave your dog to cope independently. Only step in if they are causing harm to themselves or others.

When walking your dog, do it as early in the evening as possible because the more night it is the more sound travels.

This advice can apply to cats as well

Hope this helps and good luck!

TM

Can you please note that good footwear and waterproofs are essential along with any doggy necessities that you may wish to bring.

New Course starting 13th June through to 18th July (Important news contained within)

,
This next course will be a bit lighter...............No, not in numbers.

Half a dozen of our dogs over the next six weeks are having "that" operation so for a temporary time I will be employing a "pay as you go" method of payment for those owners wishing to attend classes as of when delicate bits have healed.

I would like to keep numbers up so if people at the start of the course give me fair warning that a future lesson can't be attended (for whatever reason) I may be able to negotiate a reduction of initial payment.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT POINT: All current members will have their places automatically renewed unless I receive information to the contrary.

Lastly, many thanks to the new people joining and I look forward to welcoming you and your dog on the course.

Welcome

,
Welcome to Stix ‘n’ Bones Northwood’s newest dog training club. Set in the heart of Northwood we run regular dog training classes easily accessible for the local community and those coming from further afield.

The aim of the club is to enable every dog owner to master basic commands (sit, down, stay), recalls and obedience (walk to heel) with their dogs in a friendly supportive environment.

The classes will be kept to a manageable size within a large hall to facilitate all training needs.

The philosophy of the club is to use kind, positive reinforcement methods to bring the best out of every dog and focus is placed upon learning new skills without any pressure or fear of being put centre stage.
